All best wishes for a healthy and exciting 2012.

The world of computers and information technology is changing so rapidly it is daunting to try to work out how we can keep up with the play.

Word Processing  An example of change is the use of MS Office – Word.  We have on offer the 2003, 2007 and 2010 versions.  Also on offer are levels one and two.  Peter is willing to cover any and all combinations of these.  He does ask however, that if word processing is a skill you wish to learn or update that you phone him to explain where you fit into the options.  If you are not sure of your fit, time will be spent to get it right.

Desk Top Publishing.  Late last year I sent out an email promoting a desk top publishing application. Desk top publishing is quite different to word processing, although many of the outcomes can look the same.  Desk top publishing puts all text into frames, and each frame is formatted.  The frame can contain one word or a page of text and anything in between. If there is more text than the frame can hPPX4 exampleold, a frame is set up on the next page and is linked so the text flows over to it.  The method of dealing with pictures is delightful.

Desk top publishing is great for flyers and brochures but it also works with books; making tables of content easy, and indexing not too difficult.  The flyer on the right took about 15 minutes (in full colour.). It is output as a pdf file and can go straight to a commercial printer, or your own machine.

There are a few copies at this stage PagePlus x4 at a cost of $20. (we can get more) MS Publisher is available on line for around $200 and the professional Apple application Quark is about US$1000.

Windows XP.  With the use of Windows XP still at 38.5% of Windows computers, it is becoming difficult at SeniorNet to keep the XP courses going with our present tutors. If you have skills in any aspect of Windows XP and associated applications and could spare us some time as a tutor or assistant I would be delighted to hear from you.  The reason I ask is that this is the club whose members never stop learning and this must apply to tutors as well; they need to keep learning…  Aspects of working with XP will be discussed at the club afternoon at the end of the month.

Tablets and iPads.  Although the Committee has decided not to move towards the Apple computer – we leave it to Bayswater SeniorNet - several people have asked for discussions on the iPad, and these have been most productive.  There is a session during the month looking at iPads and tablets when all involved will learn something.

All the best for 2012 – may we prosper with learning
